iOS 17 release date: When is iOS 17 coming out?
At WWDC on June 5, a preview of iOS 17 will be shared. Developers can test it before a likely July public beta.
Following a beta testing phase, Apple will release iOS 17 in September 2023, coinciding with the launch of new iPhones.
iOS 17 supported devices? Which iPhones will be getting iOS 17?
iOS 17 compatibility concerns arise for older iPhone users, given the consistent appeal and updates of each new iOS release. So iPhone 8, 8 plus all the way up to the 14 lineup will be getting iOS 17.
- iPhone 7, iPhone SE (2016), and earlier: Not supported
- iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus: iOS 17 supported devices/ compatible
- iPhone X: iOS 17 supported device/ compatible

Smart home lock screen:
The iPhone will function as a “smart-home display” thanks to iOS 17. The iPhone may act as a home data hub by displaying information such as calendar appointments, weather information, notifications, and more when not in use and held horizontally.
When the iPhone rests horizontally on a MagSafe charging station, the smart home interface will activate, resembling displays on Echo Show or Google Nest Hub.
The features will expand on the widget choices Apple offered to the Lock Screen in iOS 16.
Apple wants to increase the usefulness of iPhones when they are placed on a desk or nightstand and are not in use.
In order to make the words on the display easier to see, Apple plans to use a dark background.
Control Centre:
Considerable change is predicted in built-in control centre of iOS 17.
The Control Center is expected to be one of the most noticeable improvements in iOS 17, but as of yet, little is known about specific changes that will be made beyond “UI” and “customization”.
Since the release of iOS 11 in 2017, the Control Center has not had a significant change.
More Dynamic island:
We hope to see the Dynamic Island UI design on all four iPhone models this year. But it’s capable of more!
Instead of just sliding down from the top of the screen when a new notice arrives, it would be helpful to have a way to check how many alerts are still unread.
Based on the applications you use, Siri could provide new Live Activities recommendations.
Alerts on Dynamic Island are temporary displays for prompt actions like Face ID and AirPods pairing, not for ongoing processes.
Journaling App:
Apple develops a journaling tool to track daily activities and thoughts, analyzing behavior for routines and anomalies like time spent at home.
It will be able to identify people who are nearby and offer possible topics that a user might like to write about.
However, all data and daily analysis will be performed on the device. The app will be able to interact with text messages and phone conversations. The journaling app is awaiting iOS 17.
Apple music in iOS 17?
Apple Music is going to have a more user-friendly layout, and it’s possible that lyrics will be seen right on the lock screen.
Which means without even opening the Apple Music app, people may sing along to their hearts’ delight.
SharePlay and AirPlay:
Apple is “working on upgrades for SharePlay” as part of iOS 17, the report claims.
Apple’s SharePlay feature enables iPhone and iPad users to view TV episodes and films with others, share Apple Music listening sessions, and more.
It was first introduced in 2021 as a component of iOS 15.
No more information is available regarding the potential changes SharePlay may receive this year.
However, Apple paid little attention to the functionality when it released iOS 16 last year. According to Bloomberg, iOS 17 will also contain innovations for AirPlay in addition to SharePlay.
According to reports, Apple has “held discussions with hotels and other places that offer TVs and speakers, aiming to make it easier for users to beam video and audio to devices they don’t own.
For instance, several hotels now provide connectivity with comparable Google Casting services.
It appears that Apple is trying to break into that market in order to increase the user base for AirPlay.
CarPlay updates:
2022 WWDC showcased improved CarPlay: enhanced car connectivity and managing radio features like volume directly through the CarPlay interface.
Additionally, Apple intends to enable multiple monitors and add widgets.
Since the first vehicles with next-generation CarPlay integration are expected in late 2023, iOS 17 or an upgrade to iOS 17 are likely to have compatibility.
Update on Sideloading and Alternate App Stores:
Beginning in 2024, European regulation dictates that Apple enable sideloading, and Apple is going to comply starting with iOS 17.
Apple’s obligation to allow alternative installation methods, such as third-party app stores, might enable European users to download apps independently in iOS 17.
For applications users install through alternative methods, developers would not be required to pay Apple’s 15 to 30% fees, although Apple still plans on charging a fee.
EU users get sideloading first; Apple could broaden if other nations adopt laws similar to the European Digital Markets Act.
Third-Party Browsers Without WebKit
Along with allowing third-party app stores, Apple might remove the WebKit restriction with iOS 17 and enable third-party browsers to utilize their own engines.
The Digital Markets Act of Europe prohibits Apple from mandating the use of its open-source WebKit engine for third-party browsers like Chrome and Firefox on iOS.
It’s uncertain if Apple will apply these changes globally or exclusively within the European Union, possibly waiving the WebKit requirement for browser apps.
iOS 17 beta limitations:
With iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4, Apple transformed the installation process for developer and public betas on iPhone and iPad.
Updates now demand an Apple ID linked to either a developer or public beta account, replacing the use of profiles.
Accessibility Updates:
Live Speech: Live Speech enables users to put in their message and have it read aloud during phone calls, FaceTime chats, and in-person discussions.
Personal Voice:

Siri Speech Speed:
You may choose between speeds of 0.8x and 2x for Siri’s speaking rate.
Magnifier Point and Speak:
The Magnifier app will audibly speak text found on labeled physical objects when pointed at them.
To assist users in navigating the buttons on a domestic appliance like a microwave, Point and Speak can recognize numbers and text.
iOS 17 Rumor’s:
